Communication: March 11, 2020

Dear TECI applicants and accepted participants,

It is with sadness we write to inform you that we must cancel the 2020 TECI Workshop in Victoria, Canada, in response to the coronavirus, COVID-19.  We have been instructed that the National Research Council of Canada, Herzberg Astronomy & Astrophysics is no longer able to host the workshop, in consideration of evolving government policy, anticipated group activities at the workshop, and most importantly the health and safety of at-risk and vulnerable members of the community.  Additionally, we understand that many workshop participants face high uncertainty about whether they will be able to travel internationally. In light of these circumstances, we are canceling the workshop.

While this decision is disappointing, please know that we will make every effort to ensure you are reimbursed for moneys you have spent to book your travel to Victoria. Please review the attachment regarding travel reimbursements for incurred travel expenses. If you have incurred expenses for TECI related travel, please submit this form by March 18.

This is tremendously disappointing for us, as we know it will be for you.  For many, TECI is not just about learning professional and collaborative skills, but is a unique opportunity to make connections with colleagues from around the world.  We recognize the cruel irony that the interconnectedness we value has become a source of concern in the midst of a viral epidemic.

The TECI team must first undo the planning we have done for May, and soon will turn our attention to possible future timelines for the TECI Program.  We will be in touch as we gain a new perspective on our situation. In the meantime please stay safe and healthy.

Thank you,

Sent on behalf of Lisa Hunter (ISEE Director) and the TECI team
