Communication: April 13, 2020

Dear friends and collaborators of WEST,

It is with sadness that we announce that due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we are forced to cancel the 2020 Workshops for Engineering & Science Transfers (WEST) program. Though WEST is still a ways away (September), other ISEE programs and funding have been impacted by COVID-19 which have forced us to have to cancel WEST.

For ten years WEST has been an important way to welcome newly accepted UCSC science and engineering transfer students. Through hands-on workshops taught by grad students and postdocs, participants gain research skills, build community in STEM disciplines, and are introduced to UCSC resources, before they start their fall quarter in September. We know that cancelling WEST will mean a lost opportunity to engage newly-admitted community college transfer students and the STEM community. However, we are confident in the enthusiasm of our community to embrace transfer students in new ways during this difficult time. And in the future, when possible to bring back WEST, we look forward to collaborating with you again.

Until then, we wish you the best for you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Lisa Hunter and WEST Team
