Inquiry Institute 2019

Sunday March 31 - Wednesday April 3, 2019

Monterey Conference Center, Monterey, CA

All 2019 PDP participants come together and commence the PDP cycle with our Inquiry Institute starting Sunday, March 31.

The Inquiry Institute features an immersion in inquiry-based learning and multiple discussion-based sessions on teaching strategies that support the PDP themes of Inquiry, Equity & Inclusion, and Assessment.  Participants will also begin designing the activities they will teach in the summer or fall.  We look forward to meeting the new cohort of participants and catching up in person with our returners from previous years.

PREPARING FOR THE PDP

Participants will need to complete some advance reading and homework in preparation for the Inquiry Institute.  You will receive your assignments a few weeks before the event, and you should expect to meet with other participants at your home institution at least once in early March.  There is also some light reading (~30 minutes) assigned during the workshops.

Unlike some conferences, each part of the Inquiry Institute builds upon the next and your attendance is required at all sessions (see agenda below as an example).  We recommend that you be caught up on any other work so you can dedicate full attention. The Institute is an intensive experience, and many participants cherish the bonds they develop with other community members who are passionate about education.

HOTEL INFORMATION

TRAVEL AND EVENT INFO

Registration will open at 8:30 AM on Sunday March 31st. We will begin our program promptly at 8:45 AM.  Participants traveling from outside the immediate region should arrange to arrive in Monterey on March 30th.

The hotel is approximately 4 miles west of the Monterey Municipal Airport.  Monterey has a strong Uber and Lyft network. Multiple taxicab companies serve the airport.  A taxi coordinator is on site to assist you with your taxi transportation needs.  No reservations are needed. (Note: typically ISEE does not cover ground transportation expenses. Please refer to your Acceptance Agreement).

Attire is very casual for most of the sessions, but it is entirely up to each individual. Be prepared to dress in layers. Temperatures in Monterey are variable over the course of the day/night. The nights and mornings tend to be foggy and chilly while the daytime can be sunny and warmer.  The last day of the Institute includes a Closing Dinner Celebration at an indoor/outdoor venue on the beach.

EXAMPLE AGENDA

Below is a sample agenda to give a sense of what topics are emphasized.

The 2019 Inquiry Institute will follow a similar outline for many of its sessions, while some sessions will be new or substantially revised.  We work every year to improve the content and flow of the PDP Institutes.
