Advancing Inclusive Leaders in STEM: 20 Years of the PDP

We are looking forward to seeing you in Hilo! This page contains information about conference activities, PDP merchandise, and how to connect with other participants before, during and after the conference.

The conference will include a series of panel presentations by PDP alumni, discussions to shape recommendations for professional development, short presentations from authors of papers in the PDP volume, and a poster session. There will also be time and space for extemporaneous discussions.

Optional pre-conference “Mentoring the Akamai Way” eventlimited space; must have indicated on registration form interest in attending. Attendance confirmation coming soon.


Meals: Participants will be provided with lunch and dinner on Thurs May 19 and Friday May 20, but are on their own for breakfast.

The restaurant at the Naniloa (Hula Hula's) is open for breakfast 6:30am – 10am. The busiest times for breakfast are 7:30am – 9:30am. To-go orders may have a 20 minute wait. If you are dining in groups of 6 people or more, they recommend you make a reservation. Groups of 6 or more require one check and 20% gratuity will be added.


Connecting with participants before and after the conference: A group of volunteers have created a tab in the participant travel spreadsheet "Hilo Activities", to help participants connect with others who are arriving early or staying after the conference. Please check it out and sign-up!


Connecting during the conference: A group of volunteers have created a Slack channel to help participants connect with others to socialize in the time surrounding formal conference times.


Final Celebration: A volunteer group is organizing the final celebration, to be held after dinner on Friday May 20. Please bring festive attire, your playful spirit, and any thoughts you might want to share about the PDP (more details to follow).

Reminder to provide any photos you may have or a short video of yourself talking about what the PDP has meant to you by May 17.  Short videos from PDP experiences are also welcome.  We're aiming to celebrate how the PDP has transformed us, but also having-too-much-fun together doing so (see picture HERE as example).


PDP 20 year anniversary t-shirts: We are very excited about the conference swag a group of volunteers has designed, which will be given to all participants at the conference. In addition, we have PDP Conference t-shirts available for purchase, please check them out! Order soon if you'd like to have it in time for the conference.
